In every business, it is highly important to have a large list of potential customers or service users. As discussed in the last series about finding a hungry market is where the money is. That is to say you look for a specific kind of problem that certain people are facing which they are willing to pay money to solve or get rid of. So as a business person, all you have to do is provide a service or product that will solve the problem and deliver it to such people in exchange for money. For example, a man wants to travel on a journey between one country to another; his problem is he cannot walk to his destination. I bet you will agree with me that he will be willing to pay anybody that can help him get to his destination. There are various services that he can choose to solve his problem in exchange for a price. By road if possible (cheap and slow), by sea or water (cheaper and slower; It may depend) and by air (not cheap but fast). Just as you can see, this is how most business works unless if it is a charity organisation.

This is more like saying why do you need customers, so as to be able to sell to them which are what we will be rewarded for. There is this popular saying in internet marketing that the money is in the list (which is also known as leads in internet marketing), I can tell you that this is partially true but the real truth is that it is how you take care of your customers that determines your take home income. This is why most businesses are not really judged by their products but mostly by how they treat the customers. I can assure you that if you have a good product and excellent customer service, you will retain most of your customers who will be loyal to you. On the other hand, if you have the best product in the world but have a very poor customer service, I can assure you that most of your customers will leave you for your competitors. So it is clear that keeping your customers happy is where the money is which will also lead to product and service improvement in most case because part of making your customers happy is upgrading your products to serve them better.
My clear message here is this; the life blood of your business relies mostly on how you treat your customers or your list. So if I may ask the question again, why do we need a list? In order to have people to sell our product and services to in which the reward is that we will make money. So the bigger your list (and how you treat them by building a strong and positive relationship with them), the bigger you chances of making money in your business. I believe this clearly signifies why building a list in your business is highly important if your business is to survive in the first place. If you don’t have a list, you don’t have a business. Period!

Once it is clear why you need a List for your business, the next thing is to learn how to build your list first and then start building a relationship with them which in return will bring you money.
